Master Darkroom printer and photographer Daniel Wheeler presents a two-day black and white printing workshop at The Art House
The first day of the workshop begins at 10:00, where participants will discuss some of examples of prints and go over the finer points of darkroom printing, exposure, tone and contrast as well as learning how to read a negative effectively.

Dan will then demonstrate various printing methods using one of his own negatives in the darkroom. This gives the opportunity to see exactly how he prints – paper selection, dodging and burning, processing and other techniques.
Dan will look at the participants’ prints and negatives towards the end of the day.

On the second day participants will be getting stuck in to printing from their own negatives in the darkroom. Dan will help participants to pick the best negative in their collection to print, and participants will spend the day honing their skills with Dan’s assistance.

We ask that participants bring a selection of negatives to choose from.
The idea is that we explore the pleasures of making silver prints during this workshop. Our aim is to produce good prints and not print a portfolio. We want you to leave this workshop with a better understanding of how to make prints in the darkroom so that you can improve you printing using the Art House Facilities, The Photo Parlour or in your own darkroom.

  • Who is the Workshop for?

This course suits those with a good basic knowledge of analogue printing in the darkroom. If you are totally new to darkroom printing, we would suggest starting with our ‘Darkroom Printing: Taster Session’ workshop first, before moving onto a more in depth understanding on our ‘Intro to Black and White Printing’ and finally, when you feel like you have a good basic knowledge, you arrive at ‘The Big Print Weekend’ which is where you’ll leave feeling equipped with advanced extensive technical knowledge and having made a series of refined silver gelatin prints.

  • Do I Need to Bring Anything?

Students are required to bring a selection of their own negatives to print from. The Art House will be providing chemistry and paper. It’s advised that you bring a few different negatives as you may find some easier to print from, than others.
