Tonye Ekine

06 September 2025 - 06 November 2025

Following his 2024 residency at The Art House, we’re thrilled to welcome back Tonye Ekine with a brand new solo exhibition featuring work shown for the very first time.

Born in Nigeria, Ekine is a storyteller who uses the Ife bronze mask as a lens to explore modern social issues in a postcolonial world. A recurring motif in his work, the mask references the ancient Yoruba city of Ife, renowned for its masterful bronze and terracotta sculptures. By weaving this symbol into his paintings, Tonye draws a powerful line between contemporary Black identity and his personal heritage, while also nodding to his love of British architecture and design.

This exciting new exhibition builds on Ekine’s distinctive painterly foundation, expanding his artistic practice into three dimensions for the first time. Developed in our accessible ceramics studio, his new sculptural forms will sit alongside paintings that continue his ongoing exploration of identity, decolonisation, and heritage.

Join us this autumn for a powerful and thoughtful exhibition that’s not to be missed.
