The Research formed in Wakefield and burst on to the UK indie scene way back in 2004. Countless headline tours, supports slots (The Cribs, Maximo Park), Festival appearances followed. A string of good press led to nice opportunities and before long, The Research had signed to At Large Recordings, a subsidiary of EMI.
A run of singles and a debut album, Breaking Up, recorded with John McEntire at his Soma Electronic Music Studios in Chicago, were released throughout 2005 and 2006. The follow up saw the band record with their long-time friend and collaborator, Jamie Lockhart, at his Greenmount Studio in Wakefield. The Old Terminal was released by This is Fake DIY Records in 2008. By 2009 the spark had died for the 3 piece and they hung up their instruments leaving adoring fans with lonely hearts.
The hard times were over In 2023 when they regrouped for a one-off show at The Theatre Royal as part of Wakefield’s final Long Division festival. This coincided with new music – Back to the Real World/Feels Like the First Time – recorded at Greenmount Studio, and released by Long Division Music.
A sell out show at the Brudenell Social Club and another sprint round the UK with old pals Maximo Park took place in autumn 2024.
Support comes from the Chorley based British Birds, a musical collaboration with a DIY ethic and nostalgic charm, rubber-banding us back to physical music creation which stretches the listeners ear and snaps them back to a familiar reality. This 4 piece dedicate themselves to the whole package, from the artwork, to screen printing merch, to recording, producing and releasing their own craft.
With a debut album and a 6-track EP under their wings, the prolific band will release their second album on June 13th alongside a string of tour dates and festival appearances. A combination of jangly catchy hooks, lullaby-like melody and sobering melancholy bring timeless psych-rock with hints of B-52s, The Vaselines, XTC and Ty Segall. The band is made up of frontman Bobby Mambo, Bass and backing vox by Ellie Winstanley, Percussion and Backing vox by Emma Townson, and drums by Mike Ainsley.
