Step into our giant Camera Obscura to explore real-time projections of the outside world passing by.
The camera obscura is a darkened room, or box, and was originally used by artists in the renaissance period, with the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Johannes Vermeer harnessing its projections to trace from. Following this, the camera obscura paved the way for the development of photography as a creative medium.
Today, our Camera Obscura continues this legacy, as both an artistic tool and a hands-on learning experience, bridging past and present in a way that is playful, educational, and inspiring.
How it Works
Our Camera Obscura is a flat-pack, portable construction that can be built on site at your venue or for the full Darkroom experience visit us at The Art House.
Once assembled, participants step into the darkened booth, where they will see vivid, real-time projections of the world outside.
With the support of our Darkroom Technician, these fleeting projections can then be captured onto light-sensitive paper and developed using traditional darkroom chemistry. Participants not only witness the projection but also take part in the full photographic process, creating a tangible image to take away.
This hands-on approach makes the Camera Obscura both a visual spectacle and a powerful learning tool, connecting science, history, and creativity.
Who it’s for
The Camera Obscura can be hired for supported educational and community workshops, giving an insight into the evolution of photography and image making. It provides an engaging, fun and innovative learning experience for people of all ages.
Workshops are tailored to suit different groups, ensuring that whether participants are children, students, or adults, they leave with new knowledge from this unique experience.
