Well Placed

We're driven by the belief that arts organisations have a significant role to play as activators for regeneration and placemaking in their communities. That's why we set up Well Placed.

Regenerating empty spaces through community engagement

It’s clear to everyone that empty shops on our high streets is a growing issue, not only unsightly but often causing anti-social behaviour and is a growing issue for landlords. We also know that people make places, and a space which is occupied will be looked after. At The Art House, we support a thriving network of artists and creatives, as well as supporting our fellow small charities and community groups. Well Placed is the link between the two, our project which aims to fill vacant spaces in town centres by connecting landlords with artists, community groups, charities and social enterprises.

Since developing Well-Placed back in 2019, we have empowered a diverse group of more than 250 arts, cultural, community and non-profit groups to reinvigorate empty shops, directly benefitting tens of thousands local people. Well Placed projects are currently taking place in Wakefield, Salford and Dewsbury.

FAQs

Well Placed, like The Art House, exists to support artists, creatives and the community. So your project needs to align with our charitable aims and ethos. We have worked with fantastic charities, social enterprises and local grassroots community initiatives. Some examples include food banks, artist studios, and registered CICs.

Well Placed spaces are free to use. Our projects are funded by the owners of the spaces and that funding is used to support our space users, develop collaborative projects together and for marketing and maintenance. The only charge to space users from The Art House is the cost of utilities that are used, we take care of everything else.

Our spaces are temporary, and are only available for us to use until a commercial tenant is found by the owners. Sometimes this is as little as 1 month, but we have also had spaces for 4 years! As a space user, you have to be prepared for the unexpected and be as flexible as possible but The Art House will be there to support you whatever happens.

Well Placed is delivered in partnership with our fantastic supporters
