Make Your Own Medieval Tyg: A Hands-On Pottery Workshop!

Step back in time and discover the art of medieval pottery as you create your own traditional Late Medieval Tyg, a distinctive handled drinking vessel steeped in history.

Led by ceramicist Naomi Aderonke, this workshop combines hands-on making with fascinating historical insight. You’ll learn about the origins and significance of the Tyg before being guided through the process of crafting your own unique version using traditional handbuilding techniques.

Working with clay slabs, you’ll shape and construct your vessel, carefully adding its characteristic multiple handles before bringing it to life with decorative details. To complete your piece, you’ll use coloured slips inspired by those used centuries ago, exploring decorative techniques found on historic Cistercian ware pottery discovered in and around Wakefield.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a pottery lover, or simply looking to try something new, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with medieval craftsmanship and create something truly personal.

    Who is the workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for adults who are complete beginners or for those who wish to refresh their previous knowledge. You don’t need to feel confident in clay to start this course as all aspects of the medium are covered.

Do I need to bring anything?

All equipment and tools will be provided for you as well materials to explore all processes. We recommend wearing old clothes or bringing an apron in case you get a bit messy! If you have long hair please tie it back.
