Alice Clayden is a Leeds-based printmaker whose practice explores self-imposed constraints on process and material. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a BA in Textile Design in 2012, Clayden stepped away from printmaking for nearly a decade before joining Leeds Print Workshop in 2021.
Developed between 2021 and 2025, Clayden’s approach, working exclusively with the mid-blue hue, has led to the creation of an extensive body of monoprints. By further limiting her use of materials, using white paper and calico fabric, these deliberate constraints have allowed Clayden to refine her practice. Exploring a wide range of monochromatic expressions through modest but focused means.
Continuing to investigate the connections between printmaking, textiles, and surface pattern, Clayden’s work often blurs the boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary print. Repetition, grids, and seriality are central to her practice, offering a sense of clarity in an often overwhelming world. Her sustained focus on blue serves as a quiet homage to her enduring love of swimming, the sea, the sky, and the vast spaces in between.
