Twitch brings together a collection of prints, paintings and illustrations by Laura Alice. The artist’s lifelong love of birds was nurtured in Wakefield, where childhood nature walks with her parents and the shared ritual of feeding birds became formative experiences. The artist recalls receiving a beautifully illustrated bird book for her seventh birthday and whilst her childhood was often troubled, these moments offered a sense of safety and comfort, becoming especially precious memories. This shared connection to nature brought her family together and continues to underpin the development of Twitch.
Birds and the natural world remain central to Alice’s wellbeing and creative practice as an adult. Returning to The Art House – home to her first studio 17 years ago, has prompted a reconnection with these early influences and inspired this new body of work. Based in West Yorkshire, Alice’s work explores vivid, subtly surreal colour, expressive mark-making and layered compositions. While screen printing is her primary medium, allowing her to preserve hand-drawn marks, she also experiments with linocut, etching and risograph processes.
The works on display are available for sale. For more information please speak to a member of the team at the Welcome Desk.
