Residency: 01 March – 27 March 2022
CUTTER // NASH is a collaboration between two disabled sound and performance artists, Gareth Cutter and Gemma Nash, whose practice investigates and holds space for queer, non-normative bodies and voices.
During their residency, CUTTER // NASH developed The Quips, a research and performance project investigating radio broadcasting’s relationship with disabled bodies and voices, and the history of rebellion and activism in pirate radio. Framed within the context of Covid-19, the artists worked with disabled people and those who were shielding through the pandemic, to bring their voices and contributions to the forefront of the project.
As society began ‘reopening’ following multiple lockdowns, the artists will explore how disabled and clinically extremely vulnerable people remained at the risk of being excluded once again, as digital and online access becomes less focused.

About the residency
The Quips will claim a creative and digital space for voices – exploring humour, rebellion, and sexuality. Taking inspiration from pirate radio stations, such as the 1947 French radio show ‘La Tribune de l’Invalide’ where disability activists spoke out about the neglect of disabled civilians, the project will be hosted on the airwaves, and will broadcast what disabled and vulnerable people want to communicate now in 2022, and as we begin to come out of the recent pandemic.
During the residency CUTTER//NASH will collaborate with The Art House’s community of studio holders and connected communities with lived experience of disability, as well as wider disability arts networks and partnerships with invitations to take part through Drake Music, Graeae Theatre Company, Unlimited, Shape, Outside In, and The Disabled Photographers Association.
The project will culminate in a live radio broadcast and video documentation following the residency.
If you have something to say?
CUTTER // NASH want to hear it, and they want the world to hear it too!
The artists’ invite contributions from disabled and clinically extremely vulnerable (CEV), people living with Long Covid, and people who’ve shielded during the pandemic, to share their experiences, thoughts, and feelings on the past 2 years and the present moment.
