Aidan Moesby is a socially engaged text-based artist. His work is concerned with the trinity of identity, memory and location.
Originally from Newcastle, Aidan Moesby has travelled extensively and has had careers as diverse as Organic Farming in Denmark and Art Therapist with Adolescents who have experienced severe primary trauma in New Zealand. Relationships, with ourselves and others, are central to his investigation of the linguistic and visual imagery we use to create and make sense of the worlds we inhabit. His text-based installations explore the conflict within the personal and cultural agendas of our emotional baggage and psychological heritage. Moesby uses a variety of media, technologies and approaches in order to realise the artwork and whether using dust, parquet, paint or pixel as a medium the text and its imbued meaning are always paramount.
Moesbys’ work is informed through the imagery and rituals we use to create and make sense of the everyday. His process is based on dialogues and conversations, forming the foundation of his research these lead to creative responses. He explores relationships between people and places through the distillation of intimate, often concealed histories. Focused on memory and identity both from a cultural and personal viewpoint, he is fascinated by how we communicate and connect. This creates a crossover for his community-based work, where much of the art he produces is socially engaged and site-specific. No matter what the medium – ink, pixel, parquet, dust – the word and its meaning are paramount and he is inspired by all things text and the letterpress tradition.
Aidan was a member of the Artists Advisory Group at The Art House, Wakefield.
