Bobbie Walkington: Beverley Road

25 March 2009 - 30 April 2009

Bobbie Walkington’s Beverley Road is an exhibition that explored memory and the act of remembering. The artist delves into the intricate nature of memory and its role in shaping identity. Drawing from her wartime childhood, Walkington uses textiles to evoke the essence of a time and place accessible only through recollection. Her work examines the fluidity of memory – its power to transport, inform, and reshape.

Her work Beverley Road, reflects on the domestic world of Walkington’s childhood, a space defined by an all-female household where textile work and gardening intertwined with daily life. Through this lens, the artist revisits formative moments, exploring early lessons in behaviour and values observed in her mother’s interactions with others.

In Self Portraits, Walkington transforms childhood photographs of her into evocative textile pieces that honour the intimacy of time spent with significant figures. Meanwhile, Melancholia investigates her personal experiences of melancholy during her youth, offering insight into the emotional complexities that shaped her early years.

Bobbie Walkington graduated from Bath Spa University in 2008, where she focused on contemporary textile practices. work resonates with themes of nostalgia, resilience, and the enduring influence of childhood on the creative imagination.
