UPDATE JAN 2025
Applications for the currently available studio have now closed. We are currently reviewing all applications and we will respond to everyone.
To keep records up to date, we encourage those who continue to be interested in being informed when further studios become available, to submit aN up-to-date expression of interest form. See the right column on this webpage for full information.
The Art House provides studios and programmes offering time, space and support for artists and associates to progress their creative, critical practice and professional careers.
Prices start from £60 per month (including utilities) – up to £250 per month depending on size.
The Art House studios are home to over 50 artists, makers and creative businesses at all stages of their careers, working across all media. Available as individual and sometimes shared spaces, ranging from 9 to 50 square metres studios are secure and accessible 24 hours, 7 days a week. Most have excellent natural light and some studios have additional facilities such as extractor fans, sinks and extra-large doors.
Studios are subsidised, making them accessible for artists who would otherwise find it difficult to afford working space. A commercial rate applies to creative businesses.
All Studio Holders have access to kitchen facilities, free wi-fi and post management as well as exclusive discounts for our shop, coffee house and meeting room hire.
In addition to offering quiet places to work, The Art House facilitates a vibrant creative environment of peer support and collaboration, with a rolling programme of events and residencies that foster national and international connections with artists, curators and sector professionals.
Studio spaces are awarded following an application, which is assessed by the studio selection panel. This panel is made up of our Executive Director, Programme Director, other members of the Team and Studio Holders.
Please note, that the expression of interest list is not first-come first-served. Everyone on the expression of interest list will be informed when a studio becomes available and invited to apply for that particular available space. When reviewing studio applications, all applicants are treated equally;wy and selection is based on a criteria.
Studio Application Selection Criteria
The Art House is committed to ensuring that everyone we work with and provide services for is treated equally, without discrimination on any grounds. When reviewing studio applications, the following points are taken into consideration:
– Quality of work
– How relevant the area of practice or work is to The Art House
– Need for physically accessible facilities
– How often the applicant intends to use the space
– Intention for space (i.e. working rather than storage)
– Ambition for career progression/organisational development in the creative industries
– Degree to which The Art House can support an applicant’s development
– Degree to which the applicant can support the The Art House community
– Application status (i.e. individual/collective/organisations). We aim to maintain a balance of individual artist/makers and organisations.
In order to limit unconscious bias in the selection process, we remove all information that reveals protected characteristics and personally identifiable information from applications before they are sent to our selection panel.
Positive action
A positive action policy for studio applications helps to address the underrepresentation of disabled artists in the studios. When a disabled candidate scores equally well as non-disabled applicants in the review process they will be given first refusal on the studio space.
Studio Application Process:
To express an interest in becoming a Studio Holder, when a space becomes available, please fill out an Expression of Interest form below
Important – Please note – we will only keep your Expression of Interest list in the year it was submitted, and all lists are refreshed on 31st December each year. To keep records up to date, we encourage those who continue to be interested in being informed when further studios become available, to resubmit a new, up-to-date expression of interest every year, or you can follow us on Social Media, where we will announce when a studio becomes available.
The Process:
Stage one:
Please complete an expression of interest form to be added to the list.
Stage two:
Everyone on the list will be contacted when a studio becomes available for applications. Full details, prices, and images of the studio will be shared with everyone. If you are interested in applying for that space, we will share how to express your interest.
Stage three:
Those interested in the studio will need to submit a completed studio interest application form. They will be contacted once the closing date for applications has passed and a selection has been made.
Stage four:
Members of The Art House staff team will review the anonymised applications. The Art House selection criteria will be followed to identify the successful applicant/s.
Stage five:
Selected applicant/s will be notified. Upon them confirming acceptance of the studio, unsuccessful applicants will be notified and given the option to remain on the waitlist.
