A group of local young creatives challenging the balance of Wakefield’s art scene through original visual artwork and site-specific installation within the community. Bonded over a passion for local emerging artist opportunities, this is the start of a series of creative collaborations. Watch as The Merrie Collective explore how the circulation of accessible and thought-provoking artwork can transform a city as we move towards a more inclusive art scene. Expect to see The Merrie Collective working to inject soulful artwork back into your local spaces.
“In August 2020 we (a collaborating group of local creatives) formed as The Merrie Collective, and had we not had the Makey Wakey programme to support us – we may have been just another group of creatives struggling to connect beyond digital screens. We moved into our space in The Ridings Shopping Centre and we suddenly had a home and a presence in central Wakefield. We converted half of our studio into a gallery and use the remainder of the space as a studio space to explore new arts projects. Though the space is temporary, it’s given us a hub and a platform for us to connect with our local community. Having a space like this makes so many of our ambitions possible and connects us to something much larger.”
