Selected as the final artist in residence of The Art House’s 2017-18 residency programme, Simona Brinkmann was based at The Art House from 1 – 31 March 2018.
The artist worked at a number of fabrication sites in West Yorkshire as well as in a studio at The Art House in Wakefield.
Working with a palette of materials including steel, leather and latex, Brinkmann refers to her process of making sculpture as similar to the composition of music; using items such as metal handrails as a structured beat or rhythm to underpin the work.
Brinkmann’s sculptural practice repositions familiar objects and materials, readdressing or questioning their intended context and connotations. From March to May 2018, The Art House staged Override, an exhibition representing both an experimentation with new materials and a reconfiguration or expansion of previous works including those developed during her 2017 residency at Fondazione Per L’Arte, Rome.
